Our annual Scholarship Awards Luncheon was held on June 21, 2022 at the Virginia Beach Convention Center and it was an awesome celebration of the achievements of Access Scholars!
Last year, Access awarded “Last-Dollar” scholarships to 114 students, totaling more than $1 million, with scholarships ranging from $5,000 to $25,000. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this was the first Scholarship Awards Luncheon to take place since 2019.
One of the many scholarships awarded during the luncheon was the Robert H. Wells and Janice G. Wells Myers-Lawson School of Construction Scholarship, which covers tuition, fees, room and board for four years at Virginia Tech. This life-changing, full-ride scholarship was the first of its kind available to Access students. It was awarded to Keegin Jessee, a Great Bridge High School graduate who was accepted into the Building Construction program.
The Scholarship Awards Luncheon was made possible with the support of the following event sponsors:
- Corporate Diamond Partner – PRA Group
- College Diamond Partner – Old Dominion University
- Doctorate Partners – Chowan University, Norfolk State University, Virginia State University, and Virginia Tech
- Gold Partner – GEICO
- Master’s Partners – Christopher Newport University, ECPI University, Elizabeth City State University, Tidewater Community College, and University of Mary Washington.

The first round of scholarships awarded as part of this annual celebration happened June 8, when Access awarded three $25,000 scholarships to students as part of the annual Scholarship Caravan. Cameron David-Elsbery of Maury High School, Victoria Rojas of Oscar Smith High School and Catherine Rose Kelly of Ocean Lakes High School were each awarded $25,000 and were selected based on their “Beating the Odds” essays in which they described hardships they have overcome.
